What is a blog?
A blog is a website which contains author's personal notes. Usually, these notes are reviews of sites which seem interesting to the blog's owner. Some of the bloggers make these reviews rather short, but sometimes they try to describe the sites in detail. A blog can be a diary as well, with posts concerning author's life, something like what I had for dinner" or what I did today". But, frankly, do you think somebody will find this interesting, except for author's friends?
The very first blog was at the same time the very first site appeared online. It was created by Tim Berners-Lee, who is also known as one of the creators of the World Wide Web. Since 1992 he has published articles about Internet development and about websites which were starting to appear. In 1996 more and more blogs were created. And, finally, in 1999 blogs became really popular, so popular that in 2003 they were considered as a separate genre of web literature. Thousands and thousands of people wanted to share information they had found online. As there were really too many blogs, a lot of Internet users, afraid of this diversity, started avoiding blogs, looking for information on well-known, reputated websites.
The bloggers' invasion' reminds me of the time when a lot of people discovered Microsoft FrontPage and started creating their homepages, loaded with non-optimized graphics and animations. These homepages were uploaded to free hosting services like Fortunecity or Angelfire. The difference between blogs and these homepages is that blogs do update and sometimes bloggers really do write useful posts. The question is, how to find these useful blogs among millions and millions of weblogs?
Please keep this in mind : the best posts are those that you wrote yourself and didn't copy/paste from other websites.
Who creates blogs? Well, the very first blogs were made by people who already knew how to create a website. A PHP programmer can easily make a blog within a few minutes. Now, with BlogBugs, there is no need to know PHP to create a weblog.
It is obvious why blogs can be useful to the society, but what is in it for bloggers? Even psychologists tried to answer this question, here is what they came up with :
- remedy for boredom
- graphorrea (you enjoy immensely writing very long messages)
It is up to you to choose the best reason.
A lot of bloggers make their blogs interactive - readers can comment on various posts. This way, blogs become real forums where users can discuss on different topics. Soon, people having the same interests started forming communities
Experts say that blogs have a great future. Dave Winer, owner of yet another blogging service, Radio Userland, predicts that in 2007 blogs as a source of information will become more popular that New-York Times website'. We just have to wait+
